Van Tubergen Open Day

So today there was an open day at van Tubergen, so I rushed out to see what goodies were available. Usually they operate as a mail order company or they go to markets with a stall but today and the rest of the weekend they hold an open day and since it is only a short trip away I thought I would check it out. First I went out to the little area where they had their normal plants for sale and picked up these.

This is a horribly blurry photo of Omphalodes cappadocica 'Starry Eyes'. I promise I'll get a better picture up for when I plant this one out. The forgetmenot flowers are really lovely with the white margins and it should grow out into a nice little carpet.

These two epimendiums look a little tatty at the moment but I have high hopes for them in the shadow containers. Not only will they provide really cool flowers in the spring but the foliage is rather lovely as well. They are Epimedium grandiflorum 'Lilafee' with purple/pink flowers and copper foliage and Epimedium youngianum 'Niveum' with white flowers.

And finally two Orientalis Poppies, 'Manhattan' which is in bud and 'Royal Wedding'.

It was rather quiet so one of the owners Fred was nice enough to give me a tour. They really grow some very interesting plants and I still had some money left in the budget for to day so I asked Fred to pick out some special things for me.

He had a nice little collection of Pleione and recommended these two. Pleione Formosana Cairngorm which has some lovely markings on the lip and Pleione Hanka.

This is a bit of a wildcard, Zingiber Mioga Dancing Crane. I have no idea how this will turn out  but it sure is exciting

And finally here is Cypripedium Henryi. Fred has them growing in the ground in a shady place  and dug one up for me. It was growing in a very sandy soil and I repotted it immediately so not to dry out the roots. Unfortunately I had no nice pots around but so be it. I mixed some garden soil with some sandy soil and gravel, I hope it likes it. There is a little bit of slug damage but that should not be too much of a problem from here on out. The flowers are very charming a nice green.
